American actress and humanitarian Angelina Jolie visited the frontline cities of Mykolaiv and Kherson in southern Ukraine. During her visit she met with local residents, medical workers, and volunteers who live under the constant threat of shelling, and saw fortified underground schools and hospitals. The trip was reported by the Legacy of War Foundation (the “Legacy of War” Foundation), which supported the visit.
“who continue their everyday life under the constant presence of drones, the threat of shelling and mines”
The Foundation noted that Jolie spent time with people who live in a daily rhythm of facing danger and maintaining everyday life under shelling, and also visited areas where nets over public roads were installed to reduce the risks from drones.
Due to the constant threat, medical services and educational programs in the region were relocated to fortified underground facilities. Jolie visited these sites, calling them a reminder both of the human cost of the conflict and of the resilience of those who continue to endure it.
Key Moments of the Visit and Impressions
Residents of Mykolaiv and Kherson belong to the many communities around the world that are experiencing long-lasting conflicts, including among civilians in Sudan, Gaza, and Congo. Diplomacy and the protection of civilians must not disappear even in the face of the brutal confrontation of weapons and technologies, – Jolie added.
On November 5, photos appeared online showing Angelina Jolie meeting with children in a shelter. It later emerged that she had previously visited sick Ukrainian children at the Bambino Gesù Hospital in Rome, and had also been in Lviv on a humanitarian mission in April 2022: she visited Lviv’s railway station, spoke with passengers on an evacuation train, and thanked the medical staff and railway workers for their work.
Also during the visit Jolie visited one of the region’s medical facilities, where people were injured as a result of Russia’s missile strike on the railway station in Kramatorsk, after which she visited a boarding school, where she spoke with the pupils and UN Goodwill Ambassadors.
At the end of the trip Jolie emphasized the importance of supporting civilians and engaging global partners in humanitarian initiatives that help people stay strong even in the hardest times.
