Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney said on Friday that the country is ready to resume trade talks with the United States, which had unexpectedly been suspended the day before. According to Carney, Canadian officials had been holding constructive discussions with their American counterparts. He added that Canada is “ready to continue this progress and build on it when the Americans are ready for such discussions”.

On October 23, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the suspension of trade talks between the United States and Canada, citing a promotional campaign featuring a quote from Ronald Reagan, launched by the province of Ontario.

On June 27, Trump also said that he would suspend all trade negotiations with Canada after the country began imposing a digital services tax aimed at U.S. IT corporations. This tax was later repealed.

On August 1, the American leader signed an order increasing tariffs for Canada from 25% to 35%. In the statement, it said that goods covered by the preferential tariff regime under the USMCA trade agreement would, as before, not be subject to the new tariffs.

In the end, it noted that the review and discussion procedures would continue in accordance with the USMCA terms and developments on the bilateral trade front.
