Czech Republic Bans Entry of Non-Accredited Russian Diplomats at Airports

As reported by the X (Twitter) account of Jan Lipavsky

The Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced a ban on the entry of Russian diplomats who do not have national accreditation. The restrictions will apply at international airports of the Czech Republic.

The decision was announced by Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský on the social network X, noting that he had initiated such a government decision.

Sabotage operations have become more frequent, and we will not risk agents under diplomatic cover. We are setting an example for other countries, and I will continue to strive for the most consistent measures at the level of the entire Schengen Area. We will protect the Czech Republic

– Jan Lipavský

The measures will not apply to diplomats who are accredited in the Czech Republic, or who have lawful transit through the country’s territory to the member state where they are accredited, or for participation in official meetings at international organizations.

In the context of the broad European discussion regarding the movement of Russian diplomats, the European Commission has proposed an approach to restricting their movement across Europe. At present, this issue is being considered at a technical level, and in the near future it will be placed on the agenda of the meeting of ambassadors of the member states.

Context and Prospects for Development

This step by the Czech Republic demonstrates a consistent stance on strengthening border security and sovereignty within the European Union. It is expected that similar initiatives by Schengen-area countries will reflect a unified EU stance on issues of diplomatic influence and protection against potential threats.
