After the meeting at the White House, leading Democrats expressed optimism about the possibility of Trump reaching a deal with them on the main health care issue, even if first they have to shut down the government to reach an agreement.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said that the president expressed willingness to extend subsidies for the revamped Obamacare, which will expire at the end of the year. According to the New York Democrat, Trump is looking to avoid sharp price increases for about 20 million insured Americans.

“We’ve shown the president some of the consequences of what’s happening in health care.”

The negotiations with the administration left the impression that a path to a compromise between the leaders could emerge: both sides hint at the possibility of either a short-term deal or a larger package of health care reforms.

The White House clarified: any agreement would come only after the Democrats agree to fund the government.

“The president wants a clean CR and he wants to keep the government open”

According to participants, Trump urged JD Vance to take a more active role in negotiations in Congress; others recalled that Schumer acknowledged some progress by the president toward accountability for a possible government shutdown.

Although both sides are still far from a concrete deal, experts warn that unlocking the government crisis will not be easy: the lack of a deal means an increasing risk of a government shutdown, which could affect many Americans.

While the White House presses Democrats to yield on funding, the opposition emphasizes the principle – not to allow spending that reduces Americans’ access to quality medical care.

Conclusion: risks of a split and opportunities for compromise

Although there are signs of progress, the prospects for a quick resolution remain hazy. If Trump cannot find common ground with the Republicans, the risk of a prolonged government shutdown will persist, and the political consequences for both parties could be significant.
