The Los Angeles Dodgers secured a convincing victory in Game 2 of the World Series at Rogers Centre, defeating the Toronto Blue Jays 5-1 and tying the series at 1-1.
The starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto again went the distance, retiring the last 20 batters in order and helping the Dodgers again even the series.
The 27-year-old right-hander struck out nine, allowing only one earned run on four hits.
According to Fox’s broadcast, this was the Dodgers’ second consecutive postseason complete game and the first Dodgers pitcher to repeat the feat since Orel Hershiser in 1988.
As in the previous game, the Dodgers started with an early lead after catcher Will Smith delivered an RBI single, bringing home Freddie Freeman and taking a 1-0 lead.
However, Blue Jays starter Kevin Gausman managed to take control of the game after a tense first inning, and Toronto tied it in the third thanks to a sacrifice fly by Alejandro Kirk.
Gausman retired 17 consecutive outs against the Dodgers to the seventh inning, when Smith again seized the moment and sent a solo home run, breaking the deadlock.
According to Elias Sports Bureau, this was the first postseason game in history in which both pitchers finished with 17 or more consecutive outs.
The Dodgers added two more runs in the eighth inning, after which Yamamoto closed the game.
This was the first complete game in the World Series since 2015, when Johnny Cueto of the Kansas City Royals opposed the Mets in Game 2.
Yamamoto also became the first pitcher since Curt Schilling to repeat such a performance after three straight postseason complete games – a Schilling feat in 2001.
“I am very happy and proud to have been able to make a big contribution and give the team a chance to win.”
“Honestly, I’m not sure about the history, but I’m very glad about what I did today.”
“He can do almost everything: he commands his fastballs very well, has a curveball and movement. Today he threw a few good cutters. Two-seamers. He had everything under control – kept them off balance.”
The series now heads to Los Angeles for Game 3; Game 3 is scheduled for Monday at 8:00 p.m. Eastern.
