In Norway on Sunday evening, September 28, flight routes had to change due to the appearance of drones: a plane from Oslo to Bardufoss turned back, and another aircraft was diverted to an alternate airport as the situation developed.
“The plane traveling from Oslo to Bardufoss was forced to turn back after a drone was detected.”
According to air-traffic control systems, the plane’s return was logged at 20:47 local time. By 21:15, the next flight had departed from the airport.
Earlier on Sunday, drones were spotted about 800 kilometers south of this incident – in the restricted zone near one of Nordland’s airports. One of the aircraft was diverted to an alternate airport, regional authorities said.
Early Monday morning, police confirmed that on Sunday over Bodø and other Nordland airports two aerial targets were seen. Police also said that the no-fly zone around four Nordland airports had been temporarily expanded from five to ten kilometers from the airports and was in effect until Monday at 12:00. A spokesperson for the aviation infrastructure said that little is known about drones in the region and that coordination between agencies is ongoing.
According to law enforcement authorities, there were no injuries, and no suspects in the crime were named. Photos depicting drones were also released, but the footage was of low quality. Local officials said that residents’ reports of drone sightings proved to be largely false.
On Saturday, authorities decided to tighten rules on drone use near four Nordland airports due to possible sightings over the main airspace facilities. The no-fly zone was expanded from five to ten kilometers, with restrictions in place until Monday at 12:00. Regional service representatives said that coordination between agencies is ongoing, and investigators are clarifying the details of the investigation.
Following the incidents in Nordland’s airspace, aviation and law enforcement agencies continue to monitor the situation. Flight safety remains a priority, and regional authorities are keeping a close watch on drone activity near airports.
