EU Commissioner Marta Kos Highlights Ukraine’s EU Path for National Minority Rights

EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, stated that Ukraine needs to develop an action plan for national communities, and EU membership will be the best way to address these issues. She voiced these words during her visit to Ukraine.

According to her, monitoring of Ukraine’s legislation on European integration has already been completed, and the details will be discussed in Kyiv on October 1. On September 29 Kos visited Uzhhorod and met with representatives of the national communities of Transcarpathia; there is a need to introduce a concrete action plan to ensure the rights and interests of these communities.

She emphasized that Ukraine’s accession to the EU is the most effective way to address the mentioned problems. For Kos, it is a great honor to help Ukraine on the path to EU membership, noting that these are the first negotiations with a country that is at war; the country is fighting for peace and security in the EU, not only within Ukraine.

What else is known about the visit: the EU Commissioner for Enlargement arrives in Ukraine with the aim of meetings with the authorities and discussions of progress in the process of joining the EU. She will stay in Ukraine from September 29 to October 1. As part of the trip, Kos will meet with the government and parliament, regional representatives to discuss decentralization reforms and with Ukraine’s anti-corruption bodies – NABU, SAP, VAKS, BEB, NACP – to emphasize the importance of the rule of law and anti-corruption reforms on the path to EU membership.

Kos will also visit the Doiko Gabora Lyceum in Uzhhorod with Hungarian-language instruction and the Uzhhorod Lyceum No. 4 with Slovak-language instruction. Thus she launched her visit, underscoring the importance of respecting the rights of national communities as a prerequisite for Ukraine’s EU membership.
