European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos arrives in Ukraine to meet with the authorities and discuss the country’s progress on its path to European Union membership. The announcement was published on the European Commission’s website.

According to the EC, Kos will stay in Ukraine until the middle of the week to reaffirm the EU’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s European future and mark the final stage of the screening for accession, highlighting the country’s achievements on its path to EU membership.

On Monday, September 29, she will visit schools for students of the Hungarian and Slovak minorities in Zakarpattia and meet with representatives of the Council of National Minorities of Ukraine, where they will discuss the government’s latest steps to strengthen minority rights, including the action plan adopted in May 2024.

After this, Kos will inspect the recently opened railway line with European gauge, which improves cross-border connectivity, stimulates trade and investment, and lays the groundwork for Ukraine’s further integration into the EU’s transport network.

On Tuesday, September 30, Kos will meet with regional representatives on decentralization reforms. Then she will participate in Ukrainian Resilience Week and visit the “Nezlamni” Rehabilitation Center, as well as the EU housing project for internally displaced persons and veterans of the war. The Commissioner will also hold meetings with civil society, women leaders, and experienced business leaders to discuss reform progress and Ukraine’s economic prospects.

Significance for Future Cooperation with the EU

This visit underscores the EU’s readiness to support Ukraine on its path to full membership and to focus on reforms, infrastructure development, and social initiatives. Joint measures aimed at strengthening minority rights, improving transport and economic interaction will help Ukraine move forward in European integration and strengthen its positions on the international stage.

Conclusion

The visit of the European Commissioner demonstrates the EU’s long-standing support for Ukraine and accelerates the dialogue on the next steps of reforms that will bring the country closer to full EU membership and strengthen stability and development in the region.
