European Commission Proposes Four Defense Initiatives to Counter Russian Aerial Threats

The European Commission has unveiled a package of four defense initiatives aimed at strengthening the EU’s security in the face of growing threats from Russia’s aerial actions. The recommendations were sent to member states ahead of the informal leaders’ meeting in Copenhagen.

The package includes four main directions, among which particular attention is paid to the Drone Wall concept, which is intended to reduce the risks of air strikes. It also outlines three additional lines of development: Eastern Flank Surveillance for early detection of threats from hybrid operations to sudden drone deployments; the Air Defense Shield aimed at expanding capabilities to counter air and missile threats; and Defensive Space Shields, which are intended to strengthen the EU’s capabilities in the space domain and provide more effective monitoring of threats in orbital space.

The document emphasizes the demanding nature of implementing these initiatives and the need for swift action. Funding for each proposal requires unanimous approval, which may require finding compromises among countries with different priorities and distances from the main theaters of operation.

The expected share of EU funding is approximately 1.5 billion euros, drawn from the European Defence Industrial Programme, though the mechanism for distributing funds is still being agreed among member states.

During the leaders’ meeting in Denmark, the priority topics will remain the development of the “drone wall” and the strengthening of defense on Europe’s eastern flank, underscoring the EU’s intent to bolster protection against Russia’s aggressive steps.
