Finland Deploys Drone Countermeasures to Support Denmark Amid Rising Threats

In the context of growing drone activity in the region, Finland decided to provide Denmark with practical support in countering drones. On September 30, Finnish President Alexander Stubb confirmed on his X page Helsinki’s readiness to strengthen cooperation with Denmark in defending airspace and countering hybrid threats that have emerged recently.

“We will continue to align our approaches to counter hybrid threats and support the development of capabilities in Europe”

Stubb added that the Finnish Border Guard would also provide support with its own forces and called such cooperation among Nordic countries a wonderful example of concrete collaboration. He said this demonstrates the possibility of joint actions in security amid growing drone threats.

The Finnish Defence Minister also noted that decisions regarding airspace monitoring and use of aircraft remain in the hands of the country’s military experts, not politicians, underscoring the role of training and professional assessment of the situation.

According to the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Ukrainian troops arrived in Denmark to train their Danish colleagues in countering drones and strengthen their knowledge in the area of airspace and armed defense.

Context of drone incidents and Denmark’s airspace restrictions

On the evening of September 22, the Danish and Norwegian police reported drone incidents in Copenhagen and Oslo. At Copenhagen’s Kastrup Airport, movement in the landing area was halted by two to three large drones, and passenger aircraft briefly circled in the air, one of them making an emergency landing due to low fuel. The airport’s operations resumed after about four hours of full closure.

The Aalborg Airport in northern Denmark was also closed overnight on September 24-25 due to drone threats in its airspace. As the Danish defence minister noted, the drones were flying in the evening and during the night near several Danish airports and military facilities. According to the official, this was certainly not a coincidence.

The night of September 25 and the events at the start of the following week also prompted movement restrictions and checks due to the possible UAV threat. In connection with the events in Denmark, several more unmanned aerial vehicles of unknown origin were spotted flying near the country’s military facilities.
