As reported on the Facebook page of the State Emergency Service in the region
In the Carpathians, at the popular Pip Ivan (Chornohirskyi) peak, the first snow of the season was recorded on September 30. The air temperature at the summit dropped to minus three degrees, and harsh conditions and a slippery surface make travel difficult. Rescuers from Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast are appealing to tourists to refrain from hikes during these days until the weather improves. This information was conveyed through the official page of the State Emergency Service on Facebook.
As of 9:00, cloudiness with precipitation is observed above the summit; a north wind of about 4 meters per second, and the temperature remains around minus 3°C.
“Rescuers warn hikers: such weather conditions significantly hinder movement and can be dangerous to health and life. A sharp drop in temperature, precipitation, wind, and poor visibility – all of this increases the risk of getting lost, injury, or hypothermia,”
How to Prepare for Winter Mountain Hiking
During winter hikes you should check the forecast in advance, choose less risky routes, not venture into the mountains alone, wear warm clothing, carry food supplies, and have a charged phone. It is also useful to inform loved ones about the route details and to have navigation tools with you. If a risk of complications arises, you should have reliable contact with rescuers and a plan of action in case of danger.
Where to Get the Latest Updates
To quickly navigate changes in the weather and the service’s recommendations, follow official sources: publications of regional emergency services and operational bulletins from local units. It is also important to be aware of local conditions on the routes and not to overestimate your own capabilities during winter hikes.
Remember: even a short foray into the mountains can be dangerous in winter. It is important to exercise caution, plan each step, and follow the advice of specialists so that a trip in the Carpathians remains a safe adventure.
