As noted by CNN
On Wednesday a German court found the palliative care nurse guilty of killing ten patients with lethal injections and of attempting to take the lives of another 27 people; she was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Prosecutors argued that most of the patients, mostly elderly, were given painkillers or sedatives to ease the nurse’s nighttime work and reduce the burden on the shift.
According to the Aachen court spokesperson, these actions were deemed especially serious crimes, meaning minimal chances for release after 15 years of serving a sentence – the shortest term for a life sentence in Germany.
Case chronology and next steps
The crimes were committed between December 2023 and May 2024 at a clinic near Aachen in western Germany.
The verdict may be appealed.
According to German media, investigators are considering several other suspicious incidents during this nurse’s career.
In Germany’s largest postwar murder series, the former nurse was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2019 for killing 85 patients.
