Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Yevhen Perebyynis accepted copies of credentials from the newly appointed German ambassador to Ukraine, Heiko Toms, who began his work in Kyiv on September 17, 2025. The ceremony took place at the diplomatic level with the participation of both sides.
During the meeting, the interlocutors discussed prospects for Ukraine–Germany partnership toward European and Euro-Atlantic integration, the current needs of Ukraine’s defense sector, and the consequences of Russia’s daily missile and drone attacks.
Ambassador Heiko Toms confirmed Germany’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and expressed readiness to expand military, economic, and humanitarian assistance in the future.
The 57-year-old diplomat Heiko Toms has many years of experience: from 2020 to 2023 he led the German embassy in Brazil, and previously held the post of Deputy Head of Germany’s representation to NATO.
Before being appointed to the new post, he held the position of State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Finance of Germany.
Staff Changes and Prospects for Cooperation
It is also known that the current German ambassador to Ukraine, Martin Egger, will head the Federal Intelligence Service of Germany (BND) as of September 15, 2025. Such personnel decisions reflect Berlin’s strategic priorities in its relations with Ukraine and the region.
The new appointment opens opportunities for further deepening cooperation in the fields of defense, energy, and humanitarian programs, considering the current international situation.
