Iran officially voiced criticism of the renewal of UN sanctions and stated that it does not recognize any attempts to establish or reinstate mechanisms to monitor compliance with restrictions. Foreign Minister Abbas Arakchi, in a letter to the UN Secretary-General, urged preventing the re-launch of sanction procedures against Tehran.
According to the minister, Iran does not recognize the legitimacy of any actions to restore sanctions and urged not to allow the revival of work by the Sanctions Committee and the Group of Experts monitoring compliance with restrictions. He stressed that the reimposition of sanctions is a politically motivated step that does not reflect the real circumstances.
What preceded the events: previously, world institutions and agencies reported the resumption of an arms embargo and a number of other sanctions against Iran after accusations of violating the core of the 2015 agreement. Iran denies intentions to develop nuclear weapons and warns of a possible response in case of intensified pressure.
The UN Security Council sanctions, which were in force from 2006–2010, were renewed and took effect on Saturday evening Eastern Time. They prohibit uranium enrichment and processing, ban arms shipments to Iran, and restrict activities related to ballistic missiles.
Additionally, asset freezes were imposed on dozens of Iranian officials and companies, travel bans were imposed on certain individuals, and restrictions on Iran’s participation in international projects related to the use of uranium.
Analysts warn that the renewal of sanctions could heighten tensions in Iran–Western relations, affect the formation of a coalition in support of the 2015 nuclear deal, and complicate diplomatic efforts to resolve the issue of Iran’s nuclear program and regional security.
Looking ahead, these steps underscore the importance of multilateral dialogue and the need for new approaches to stabilizing the region and reducing tensions surrounding Iran’s nuclear program.
