Jessica Fishlock: Second Oldest Debutant at Women's Euro 2025

As reported by the online media Suspilne.

Jessica Fishlock, the 38-year-old midfielder for the Wales national team, became the second oldest player in history to make her debut at the Women’s European Football Championship. The Welsh player came close to the record held by Ukrainian Olena Mazurenko since 2009.

This tournament was historic for the Wales women’s team, as the squad qualified for the final stage of the continental championship for the first time. Wales played their debut match against the Netherlands on the fourth day of Group D competition. Jessica Fishlock took the field at the age of 38 years and 172 days, playing 64 minutes.

Thus, Fishlock became the second oldest player to debut at the Women’s Euro. The age record belongs to Ukrainian Olena Mazurenko, who debuted at Euro 2009 at 39 years and 303 days old.

Jessica is the oldest player at Euro 2025 among all participants. Besides her, the tournament also features Sweden’s defender Linda Sembrant, who is 38 years and 51 days old.

Oldest players at Euro 2025 (as of July 6)

Jessica Fishlock (Wales) – 38 years and 173 days

Linda Sembrant (Sweden) – 38 years and 51 days

Nadia Nadim (Denmark) – 37 years and 184 days

Linda Sällström (Finland) – 36 years and 355 days

Sanne Troelsgaard (Denmark) – 36 years and 324 days

Wales’ opening match at Euro 2025 ended in a heavy 0-3 defeat to the Netherlands. The Welsh conceded the first goal in the third minute of added time in the first half, with two more goals coming shortly after the break.

“It’s hard for us to accept this result. They [the Netherlands] are a great team, but we were a bit disappointed not to reach halftime at 0-0, because I think that would have really changed the momentum. But we learned a lot. That’s what playing at the highest level is about: you switch off for a moment, and you get punished with fantastic goals. It’s a lesson for us, and we just need to regroup and prepare for the match against France,” Fishlock said after the game.

The Wales national team will play their next match on Wednesday, July 9, against France. The kickoff is scheduled for 22:00 Kyiv time.
