Ahead of Jimmy Kimmel’s return to his late-night show on Tuesday, entertainers and figures in the entertainment industry united in support of him. A loud wave of support from Hollywood showed that Kimmel wields influence not only as an entertaining figure but also as a participant in a public dialogue where words carry weight for a broad audience.
The anticipated strong support from Hollywood underscores his role as a mediator in the public conversation, where the boundaries between show business and public opinion are often blurred. His thoughts are part of a broader discussion that extends beyond the television program.
“Thank you to everyone who supported our show, who felt it was important to do something so that your voices would be heard, and so that mine could be heard as well. I will never forget this.”
The most unexpected support for the comedian came from some conservatives. Such a mixed signal from public figures outside his usual circle added a new dimension to debates about free speech and the limits of criticism.
“Perhaps it’s strange, perhaps, most importantly – thank you to the people who do not support my show and my views, but support my right to express them. People I never imagined, like Ben Shapiro, Clay Travis, Candace Owens, Mitch McConnell, Rand Paul, even my old friend Ted Cruz, who, believe it or not, said something very wonderful about me.”
The return after nearly a week-long pause, tied to pressure from the administration, also drew attention to how major studios, such as Disney and ABC, can become targets for further scrutiny and vigilance by media companies and political structures.
Before the monologue aired, U.S. President Donald Trump posted a new legal threat against ABC on Truth Social.
“He is yet another arm of the Democratic National Committee, and from my information this would be a significant illegal financial contribution. I think we’ll test ABC on this. We’ll see how it goes.”
Kimmel acknowledged unlikely allies – from Senator Ted Cruz to Howard Stern – and stressed that the discussions in recent days go beyond a single show and career.
“This show isn’t the important thing,” said Kimmel in a message to the viewers. “What matters is that we live in a country that gives us the opportunity to have such a show.”
The episode’s guests included Canadian singer Sarah McLachlan, who canceled a promotional appearance at a Disney promotional event in connection with an upcoming documentary before Kimmel’s return, and actor Glen Powell, who calls himself a “born and raised” Texan and who still considers the United States his home.
“So glad to see you. Thank you for being here. Sorry to drag you into all of this.”
“It’s an honor. I’m just really glad you’re back,” Powell replied, expressing support after the host’s return.
Although Kimmel’s words elicited a range of reactions, the main message remained: discussions about the cultural divide require open dialogue, and the show’s return does not solve the problem by itself. Yet it demonstrates that between different viewpoints one can find common ground if both sides are willing to listen to one another and respect the right of others to express their opinions, even in the most heated political discussions.
