Debates over Soviet-era street names sparked a controversy in Kharkiv where local council sought to keep Red Army commander Geogriy Zhukov street despite a new ‘decommunisation’ law banning such Soviet era symbols.

When asked about the Marshal Zhukov street  in Kharkiv in  an  interview with  ‘1+1’TV channel, the Ukrainian president nonchalantly said ‘it is a local issue’, adding that ‘for older people he was a marshal of victory.. so let them keep that street’.

Such response from the Ukrainian president  comes as sheer disregard of the ‘decommunisation’ law that bans  use of Soviet-era officials names for ‘geographical objects’ in Ukraine.

Zelensky’s statement, unintentionally or not, can lead to violation of the law.
