On Wednesday, Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs handed a protest note to the Russian Federation’s chargé d’affaires in connection with the mass shelling of Ukraine.
According to Lithuanian authorities, the document was delivered and handed over to the Russian embassy.
The note condemns attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, which led to disruptions in electricity and water supply.
Context and Demands of the Lithuanian MFA
The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry emphasizes that attacks on the civilian population and civilian facilities, including the children’s hospital in Kherson, demonstrate the aggressor’s intent to take the lives of people living near the front line.
That the Russian authorities are attempting, through coordinated actions, to drive Ukrainian civilians from their places of residence, is also mentioned in last week’s report by the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the events in Ukraine
According to the ministry, Lithuania calls on Russia to immediately stop drone and missile attacks, as well as other actions that terrorize the civilian population of Ukraine, including deportations, and to adhere to international humanitarian law.
It is also noted that Lithuania has repeatedly urged Russia to stop its aggression against Ukraine, withdraw its troops from internationally recognized Ukrainian territory, and compensate for the damages caused by Russian aggression, according to Lithuanian official sources.
According to the ministry, on October 29 during the shelling of the children’s hospital in Kherson four children aged 8 to 16 were injured: two girls, aged 9 and 16, and two brothers – aged 8 and 15; five adults were also injured, three of whom are medical workers.
