Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk continues to get off to a strong start at the WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing, advancing to the round of 16 after defeating Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the third round. Thanks to her seeded status, Kostyuk began in the second round and comfortably defeated Ella Seidel in straight sets.
In the quarterfinals she faced a familiar opponent – Aliaksandra Sasnovich, who was ranked 130th in the world. Before that the Belarusian made it into the main draw by defeating Jenisu Tjen and Naomi Osaka. This was Kostyuk’s second meeting with Sasnovich in her career after the Ukrainian’s victory over her in Guadalajara in 2022.
How the match began and how the events unfolded
In the first set, a key moment arrived in the seventh game: she broke her opponent’s serve, held onto the lead, and won the set 6-4. In the second set, the Ukrainian immediately broke Sasnovich’s serve twice and took a 4-1 lead. In the eighth game Sasnovich had five break points, but Kostyuk held her nerve, consolidated her advantage on her own serve, and sealed the victory 6-2. The match lasted 1 hour 25 minutes, with the opponent not converting any of her 11 break points, while Kostyuk was as precise as possible in her opportunities.
This success allowed Kostyuk to reach the quarterfinals of a WTA 1000 event for the second consecutive time after the same result at the US Open. The Ukrainian’s next opponent will be the winner of the Emma Raducanu and Jessica Pegula match, which will meet on Monday, September 29.
