As reported by the online media Suspilne.
In the Mykolaiv region, specialists of the Security Service detained a local entrepreneur suspected of smuggling. According to the investigation, the man planned to sell shipborne artillery systems for the Defense Forces of Ukraine to Russia. The agency confirmed the information on September 29.
According to the investigation, the suspect aimed to export to Russia critically important components for naval artillery installations. These include artillery systems of various types – from six-barrel AO-18 autocannons to universal AK-176M mounts – for a total value of nearly 1.5 million U.S. dollars.
“Such weapons are used on combat ships to strike fast-moving targets at short distances, including drones and cruise missiles.”
The components seized by SBU specialists.
The detainee is a Mykolaiv-based entrepreneur. According to the investigation, the man unlawfully seized the weapons during the full-scale war. He planned to transport them first to EU countries and Southeast Asia, and from there to Russia. For this, he entered into fictitious contracts with foreign-owned companies, the SBU reported.
“To covertly export the weapons, the defendant placed them in special containers that outwardly looked like water heaters. Security Service officers uncovered the offender at the stage of preparing to export defense products and detained him.”
During searches of his warehouses and offices, SBU specialists seized: artillery installations in specially manufactured containers; additional components for military boats; contracts with foreign entrepreneurs.
“The seized weapons will be transferred to meet the needs of the Defense Forces.”
SBU investigators informed the man that he was suspected of preparing for smuggling in conspiracy with a group of individuals. He is currently in custody and may receive up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.
