NATO's Mark Rutte Warns of Possible Russian Threat to Estonia in 5-7 Years

This was stated in an interview with The New York Times.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte expressed the view that although Vladimir Putin currently has no intention of attacking Estonia, such a threat could arise in 5-7 years if NATO does not strengthen its defense. He shared this information in an interview with The New York Times.

Rutte commented on an article in The New Yorker that discussed military exercises in Estonia, which tested the country’s readiness for a possible invasion by Russia. The article noted that Estonia lacks its own air force and navy, and the hypothetical enemy army had a significant advantage during the exercises. The authors concluded that the situation for Estonia is quite challenging.

“What is described in The New Yorker is true, but it is not a warning sign, because we have all the plans in place in case of an attack on Estonia – and the Russians know this – our response will be devastating. I cannot go into all the details because, as I understand, Vladimir Putin watches these programs.”

He emphasized that NATO member countries must not only have plans in case of an attack but also provide them with the necessary personnel and military equipment. That is why allies need to increase military spending.

Rutte also noted that Putin would not dare to attack now, as in that case all NATO forces, including support from the United States, would come to Estonia’s aid. However, he warned that the situation could change in 5-7 years if additional investments in defense are not made.

“But the point is not that the Estonians are left on their own. It will be the full NATO forces, including full support from the United States, that will come to help. Putin knows this. That is why he will not attack Estonia now. But he might do so in five or seven years if we do not make these additional investments.”

When asked about his confidence that the US would indeed come to Estonia’s aid in the event of a Russian attack, Rutte replied that he is 100% certain of this.

“I have no doubts whatsoever, and this was very clearly stated at the concluding press conference in The Hague. Also, everything I have discussed over the past six months with the new US administration – there is absolutely no doubt that the US is fully committed to NATO, fully committed to Article 5.”
