The President of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro spoke out against the so-called ‘crazy war’, noting that the escalation of the U.S. military campaign is driving up tensions in the region. International observers and analysts are closely watching events in the country and the region.

Maduro issued a call for peace during a meeting with unions that support his policies. «Yes, peace, yes, peace forever, peace forever. No crazy war, please!»

Maduro’s comment came after U.S. President Donald Trump announced sanctioned covert operations against Venezuela and is considering ground intervention as part of a campaign against drug trafficking in the Caribbean Basin and the Pacific Ocean.

«We know the CIA is present in Venezuela. They may deploy – I don’t know how many – CIA-linked units for covert operations, but any attempt will be futile»

At the end of September, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened Venezuelan drug traffickers with “destruction,” accusing Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro of drug trafficking to the United States.

What is known about the U.S. attacks on ships allegedly involved in drug trafficking: in early September the United States attacked a vessel from Venezuela in the Caribbean Sea, which may have carried drugs, and 11 militants were reported killed. On September 15, Trump announced another army strike on another vessel from Venezuela in international waters – three men were killed. The human rights organization Human Rights Watch stated that strikes on suspected drug-running vessels are “unlawful extrajudicial killings”.

«Their actions show signs of criminal offenses under Article 345 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, ‘Threats or violence against a law enforcement officer’ and Article 194, ‘Intentional destruction or damage of property’»

In response, Venezuela began military exercises in the Caribbean region amid heightened tensions with the United States. On October 9, the Venezuelan government appealed to the United Nations Security Council to hold an urgent meeting devoted to U.S. military actions in waters off the country’s southern coast, which have taken place in recent weeks.

The situation in the region remains tense, and the international community calls for restraint and for diplomatic solutions to avoid a new wave of armed confrontation.
