According to the North Korean state news agency KCNA
North Korea described the new US sanctions as an act of hostility and said that pressure would not force the regime to change: on the contrary, it could provoke resistance among the population and lead to new anti-American steps in response.
The statement was made by North Korea’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kim In-chol, and it was released by the North Korean news agency KCNA.
Rhetoric on sanctions and possible consequences
«Recently the US administration imposed a new package of sanctions against the DPRK, the fifth since it took office. This serves to end speculation by the world and public opinion regarding a change in US policy toward Pyongyang and the establishment of dialogue between the two countries. The US administration has shown that it will be hostile to the DPRK to the very end»
The DPRK emphasizes that Washington should not expect that increasing pressure will lead to a shift in Pyongyang’s positions.
«US sanctions will have no impact on the thinking and views of the DPRK in the future, as they have not in the past… The United States should understand that they do not have the ability to change the current strategic situation between the two countries in their favor»
«Since the current US administration has confirmed its intention to treat us with hostility until the end, we will also treat them in kind until the end»
In the context of potential future dialogue, experts recall that after Donald Trump came to power in the United States and a few meetings with North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un, the expert community spoke of a possible new summit, particularly in connection with Trump’s Asian tour. However, according to experts, discussions so far remain at the level of statements, and there are no concrete agreements on a meeting.
On November 4, the United States announced sanctions against a dozen individuals and entities in North Korea who were involved in kidnapping and money-laundering schemes to support the Pyongyang regime and its nuclear programs.
