Official Sequel to The Simpsons Movie Announced for 2027 Release

Disney and 20th Century Studios are developing an official sequel to the animated film ‘The Simpsons Movie’ (2007). The premiere of the new film is scheduled for July 23, 2027, and will be released in theaters worldwide.

Along with the announcement, a poster featuring the iconic pink doughnut and the caption “Homer Returns for a Moment” appeared. Details of the plot are currently kept under wraps.

The Past, the Future, and the Context of the Return

The animated series ‘The Simpsons’ – created by Matt Groening – is the longest-running animated series and sitcom in American television history. In 2025, it was renewed for a 40th season, which will air in 2028–2029.

The events of the series unfold in the fictional town of Springfield, where the Simpson family lives: father Homer, mother Marge, and children Bart, Lisa, and Maggie.

The film, released in July 2007, achieved significant commercial success: worldwide gross of about $536 million on a budget of around $75 million. According to the plot, the film tells the story of Homer, who pollutes the Springfield River and triggers an environmental crisis in the town.
