Poland May Lift Border Controls with Germany if Berlin Acts First

This was stated to journalists by the head of the Polish Ministry of Internal Affairs Tomasz Siemoniak while visiting the border of Poland with Lithuania, reports the newspaper Rzeczpospolita

Poland is ready to lift the enhanced border controls with Germany if Berlin takes the same step. This was announced by Poland’s Minister of the Interior, Tomasz Semońak, during his visit to the border with Lithuania, as reported by the newspaper Rzeczpospolita.

According to Semońak, if Germany decides to cancel the controls, the Polish side will also “have no grounds” to continue such measures.

“As soon as the reasons that force us to implement temporary checks disappear, we will gladly cancel them. If Germany cancels its checks, which, I remind you, have been in place since October 2023, we also see no reason to check people entering from Germany.”

The minister also emphasized that the temporary checks may concern not only the border with Germany but also with Lithuania, and their duration can be extended beyond 30 days.

“This decision is driven by a shared problem faced by Lithuania, Poland, and the European Union, namely the fight against illegal migration.”

Earlier, Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that from July 7, Polish authorities will reinstate border controls with Lithuania and Germany to combat illegal migration.
