In the Lviv region, at the Domazhyr Bear Shelter, rescued bear cubs abandoned by their mother arrived. At the time of rescue, they were hungry and exhausted, weighing only 5 and 7 kg. They were named Rune and Kodi.
According to shelter staff, at the beginning of this year the bear cubs were found in the wild without their mother. A local hunting station monitored them for two days, hoping the mother bear would return for them, but this did not happen.
At only a few weeks old, they had no chance to survive on their own, so they decided to take them to the shelter for care and rehabilitation.
“The cubs were hungry and exhausted, weighing only 5 and 7 kg. This was an emergency rescue. While ideally they should be rehabilitated and released back into the wild, there are currently no centers in Ukraine for the rehabilitation of brown bears and their return to the wild. Therefore we took them under our care to give them the best possible life,”
Now Rune and Kodi have been at the shelter for about eight months. They weigh over 30 kg each, and a team of specialists cares for them around the clock, monitoring their diet, physical condition, and overall development.
