This is reported on the website of the Romanian General Prosecutor’s Office
On July 2, 2025, the Romanian prosecutor’s office sent the case of former presidential candidate and far-right politician Călin Georgescu to court. He is accused of promoting fascist and racist ideas, as well as glorifying individuals involved in genocide and war crimes. Although the accused’s name was not specified, according to Radio Free Europe, it is indeed Georgescu.
The investigation established that from 2020 to 2025, Georgescu violated the Criminal Code article five times, which prohibits the public promotion of fascist, legionary, racist, or xenophobic ideas. In his speeches, he called for the “mobilization of the nation to create a new man based on Orthodox mysticism” and excessively glorified the historical past, comparing it to current events where, in his view, the dignity of the national community is oppressed by foreign states.
Georgescu also actively shaped a positive image of Ion Antonescu – the dictator considered a war criminal in Romania. He praised him as a national hero and imitated his gestures, words, and intonation. In October 2021, during a speech in Bucharest before a crowd of protesters, the politician performed the legionary salute.
“The crime the politician is accused of carries a penalty of imprisonment from 3 months to 3 years and deprivation of certain rights. The maximum sentence can be extended by an additional 3 years.”
Călin Georgescu, a 62-year-old agricultural engineer, formally non-partisan, previously belonged to the far-right nationalist “Alliance for the Union of Romanians.” For a long time, he did not appear in social polls, and before the elections, he was predicted to receive between 4 and 7 percent support. His popularity grew thanks to TikTok videos that became widely circulated online.
DW describes Georgescu as a far-right politician and Orthodox fundamentalist who admired Putin as much as the Romanian fascists from the “Legionary Movement” active between the two world wars. He was skeptical about Romania’s NATO membership and called for a review of the policy of aid to Ukraine.
Georgescu did not conduct a genuine election campaign, had no political party or organization, and traditional media barely covered his activities.
Presidential Elections in Romania
In December 2024, the Romanian Constitutional Court annulled the results of the November elections, in which the pro-Russian candidate Călin Georgescu won the first round. Romanian intelligence agencies suspected Russian interference in the elections, and Georgescu was banned from running.
The first round of the early presidential elections took place on May 4, 2025. The second round featured far-right candidate George Simion (40.96% of the vote) and independent candidate, Bucharest mayor Nicușor Dan (20.99% of the vote).
The second round was held on May 18, with Nicușor Dan winning over 54% of the vote. His opponent Simion received over 46% and attempted to challenge the results in the Constitutional Court, but the court unanimously rejected his claim as unfounded.
On May 26, Dan took the oath and officially became head of state. His priorities include education, healthcare, justice, the economy, the environment, and Romania’s foreign policy.
