Farmingdale, New York – after a weekend of chaos at Bethpage Black, the dust settled, but it set a high bar for the Ryder Cup’s extraordinary tournament.
The main news is that Europe secured a stunning victory on foreign soil – a competition that at times gripped the soul and at other times left spectators breathless, simultaneously thrilling and draining them.
The American team was on the brink of embarrassment, but on Sunday the hosts deftly regrouped and nearly pulled off one of the most astonishing comebacks in sporting history.
There were many reasons to celebrate, but after the champagne dried up there remained a sour aftertaste.
Many European stars faced hostile spectator behavior – insults, profanity, and personal taunts. Rory McIlroy became a target over the course of the competition, as did his wife.
«I was there for two days with Erica McIlroy, and the amount of abuse she received was staggering.»
«And how she supported her husband and the team was incredible.»
The situation around the McIlroy group on Saturday afternoon became so tense that police with dogs were brought onto the field to guard it.
«I want them released from their leashes»
«Shut up, to hell with it!»
“The police there and the security presence were incredible,” McIlroy said. “Nothing should have happened; there was no physical altercation, but the language was unacceptable and insulting.”
Although he believes the problems were real only for a subset of fans, it left a mark on the event and prompted reflection on whether the host team was the real driver of the aggression.
«I don’t think we should ever accept this in golf. Golf has to be at a higher level than what we saw this week.»
In two years Europe will again claim the trophy and will strive to win a third consecutive time at Adare Manor in Ireland. McIlroy says the players will do everything to ensure their fans understand that such insults will not be tolerated.
“Golf must uphold a gigantic standard – it should unite people. Golf teaches etiquette, the rules, and respect for others,” he stressed. And yet the team left New York with the feeling that they had had the last laugh, turning the insults into fuel for an incredible display.
«Golf must uphold a gigantic standard – it should unite people. Golf teaches etiquette, the rules, and respect for others.»
“We’ll celebrate properly tonight,” McIlroy promised.
In the wake of the events in New York, expectations for ethics and fan behavior remain at risk, but Europe’s team is focused on upcoming competitions. The players’ game plan and the support from partners continue to shape the Ryder Cup’s image as an event where sport and respect must be the central motifs.
