Russia Plans New Prisons in Occupied Kherson, Increasing Repression

As reported by Center for National Resistance

The occupiers are planning to build new prisons on the temporarily occupied left bank of Kherson region. The Center for National Resistance published this information. The post noted that the illegal “governor” Volodymyr Saldo met with the head of Russia’s Federal Penitentiary Service Arkadiy Gostev. The parties discussed the restoration and construction of new correctional facilities on the occupied territory.

According to the Center for National Resistance, the Russians have already identified several sites for future prisons – mostly old SIZO facilities or industrial premises repurposed for detention.

It is also known that earlier, CNS reported about the unlawful sentencing to 12.5 years of imprisonment of a resident of the Nova Mayachka settlement, Serhiy Chebukhin.

The Center for National Resistance emphasizes that such steps indicate an activation/intensification of the repressive infrastructure in the occupied part of Kherson region and its further exploitation by Russian structures.

Context and consequences for the population

Strengthening the repressive apparatus in temporarily occupied territories creates additional risks to the rights and freedoms of local residents and worsens the humanitarian situation in the south of the country.
