Russian Drone Strike Kills Civilian in Sumy Region, War Crime Investigation Launched

On Thursday, September 29, 2025, at around 3:00 p.m., a Russian drone struck the civilian infrastructure of the Shalyhyne community in Sumy region. As a result of the strike, a 60-year-old woman sustained injuries from which she died after being hospitalized.

According to the regional prosecutor’s office, a pretrial investigation has been opened into a war crime that resulted in a person’s death (Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). The investigation is being carried out by the Shostka District Prosecutor’s Office under the procedural guidance of the regional prosecutor’s office.

According to law enforcement, over the course of a day, seven civilians were wounded and injured due to Russian shelling in Sumy region: in the Konotop community – a 42-year-old woman and men aged 33 and 20; in the Seredyno-Buda community – women aged 62, 74 and 41; in the Buryn community – a 65-year-old woman.

The information is confirmed by law enforcement authorities. The situation on the ground is being clarified, and official updates will be provided by regional authorities as new data becomes available.

Context of the event and the next steps in the investigation

Law enforcement is working to establish all the circumstances of the strike and to gather evidence. The investigation continues in accordance with the law to identify those responsible and ensure accountability for the war crime.

Security measures and support for the population continue in the region, as well as coordination with local services regarding the restoration of infrastructure. Residents are asked to follow the recommendations of regional services and to be cautious in case of renewed threats.
