As reported by NATO Maritime Command (NATO Maritime Command)

In the northwest of France near the Brittany coast, a Russian diesel-electric submarine B-261 “Novorossiysk” appeared, drawing attention to the area and raising questions about security in the region. To monitor the situation, France dispatched a Navy frigate, and NATO says it is ready to defend allies and maintain vigilance in the Atlantic.

According to NATO, the French frigate is monitoring the Alliance’s sea approaches and recording the submarine’s presence on the surface off the Brittany coast.

According to the Telegram channel VChK-OGPU, which belongs to Russian military sources, the submarine was forced to surface due to a serious technical fault in the fuel system. Specifically, fuel began to flow directly into the hold, creating an explosive situation. The crew did not have the necessary spare parts or qualified specialists to fix the fault, so they could not handle the problem on their own.

The B-261 submarine is part of the 4th Separate Submarine Brigade of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. It was laid down in 2010 in Saint Petersburg, launched in 2013, and joined the Russian Navy in 2014.

The appearance of this vessel and its state in the region underscore the growing attention to submarine forces in the Western theatre and the urgent need to improve maritime awareness among allies.
