The Donald Trump administration plans to use about $250 million allocated for foreign aid to organize the deportation of migrants from the United States. Among those they want to send back home are Ukrainians. This information was revealed by The Washington Post, citing internal administration documents.
According to the document, migrants who choose to return home voluntarily will receive financial assistance of $1,000 from the U.S. government. At the same time, the administration is trying to bypass the UN and its agency – the International Organization for Migration, which usually helps migrants return home. Instead, deportations are planned to be carried out independently.
The category of migrants targeted for deportation includes Ukrainians, Haitians, Afghans, Palestinians, Libyans, Sudanese, Syrians, and Yemenis. The UN opposes such actions, as they may threaten the safety of these people in their home countries. This is especially true for migrants who have temporary protection in the U.S. For example, the Trump administration plans to revoke this status for Haitians as early as summer 2025.
Earlier, it became known that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security launched a program that covers the costs of returning home for migrants who entered the country illegally.
Illegal Migration in Trump’s Campaign
Illegal immigration became one of the key issues in Donald Trump’s election campaign. He promised to make border protection a priority and deport millions of migrants if re-elected president.
On January 22, Trump signed an order suspending the physical entry of foreigners attempting to cross into the U.S. illegally through the southern border with Mexico. On March 1, the Pentagon announced the deployment of a Stryker brigade combat team and a general support aviation battalion to this border.
