Following a phone call on Friday, September 19, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump and the leader of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping discussed two main topics: Russia’s war in Ukraine and the anticipated TikTok agreement. According to Trump, the conversation was very productive and highlighted progress in several important areas, including trade, the fight against fentanyl, and efforts to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, as well as the approval of the TikTok deal. Trump also said that he had agreed with President Xi to meet during the APEC summit in South Korea.
“I just finished a very productive conversation with Chinese President Xi. We have made progress on many very important issues, including trade, fentanyl, the need to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, and the approval of the TikTok deal. I also agreed with President Xi that we will meet at the APEC summit in South Korea,”
The discussions also highlighted the possible visit by Trump to China at the beginning of next year, while Xi stated his readiness to respond with reciprocal steps and to ensure an appropriate time for a meeting within the framework of diplomatic dialogue.
“The conversation was very successful; we will speak again by phone, grateful for the approval of TikTok, and look forward to meeting at the APEC summit”
Analysts note that the TikTok deal could have significant implications for global regulatory approaches to digital services, cybersecurity, and data privacy, depending on how the parties define the framework for operations and monitoring of compliance with the agreements.
Impact on Global Diplomacy and the Digital Regulatory Landscape
Experts note that further coordination between the United States and China in the realm of technology and security could influence the overall dynamics of global diplomacy. If the TikTok deal is implemented with strong guarantees of transparency and data controls, it could spur further steps by other countries in forming common standards for digital platforms and their regulation on the world stage.
