President Donald Trump is weighing possible actions against facilities where cocaine is produced, as well as trafficking routes inside Venezuela. There is not yet a final decision on implementing such measures, according to three American officials.
While not officially ruling out a diplomatic path to curb the flow of narcotics into the United States, the administration’s efforts remain tied to Venezuela. Venezuela is not considered a primary source of cocaine, but the United States is seeking to tie Nicolás Maduro to drug trafficking.
Strategy and Potential Steps
Against this backdrop, signs of possible military escalation are emerging: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered the deployment of the most advanced aircraft carrier strike group currently stationed in Europe to the Caribbean region amid a significant buildup of U.S. forces there. The administration has also authorized the CIA to conduct covert operations in Venezuela.
“There are plans the president is considering.”
“He has not ruled out diplomacy.”
Other officials note that there are various options for action, but the main focus is on Venezuela. It is also known that an aggressive operation inside the country could require congressional approval or its involvement in briefings before further steps.
According to sources, Trump may be considering a broader approach, but no concrete plans have yet been identified. The Pentagon explained that the deployment of the Ford Carrier Strike Group aims to dismantle transnational criminal organizations and counter-narcoterrorism. The Ford Carrier Strike Group was spotted near the Port of Split in Croatia on October 21, after which a prolonged movement to the Caribbean region is expected.
It is also noted that the United States has deployed forces in the region, including F-35s in Puerto Rico and MQ-9 Reapers on the island, and Roosevelt Roads in Puerto Rico has resumed operations after a long idle period. The reporting was prepared by journalists monitoring developments in the region.
