U.S. President Donald Trump claims that during a recent phone call the Russian leader Vladimir Putin allegedly asked him to “resolve” the war against Ukraine. Trump also criticized the UN for “complete inaction” on this issue. He said this during a speech at the American Business Forum in Miami. According to the U.S. president, the call took place two weeks ago. Their last conversation took place on October 16.

Trump’s Statement and the Context of the Conversation

“I spoke with him (Putin) two weeks ago, and he said, basically, we tried to settle this war for 10 years and couldn’t do it. You have to settle this”

– Donald Trump

The White House chief added that he “settled some of these issues in an hour,” but did not specify which agreements he was referring to.

At the same time, he accused the United Nations of “complete inaction” in resolving the Russia-Ukraine war and noted that after returning to the White House in January 2025 he allegedly halted other conflicts.

Trump has repeatedly expressed disappointment with the Russian leader, and on the eve of a meeting with Zelenskiy in Washington he suggested that Putin would end the war against Ukraine. On October 16, during a phone call, Putin and Trump discussed the possibility of a meeting in Hungary. Then the United States did not specify the date of the meeting, but Trump noted that it could take place “within two weeks.”

On October 17 he stated that the Kremlin leader is deliberately trying to “drag out the time” in the negotiations for peace talks with Ukraine. On October 22, Trump canceled his meeting with Putin in Budapest. For his part, Putin stated that the meeting with Trump was not canceled, but “postponed”.

In the context of these statements, there is ongoing discussion about potential future contacts between the leaders and whether, and when, a new round of negotiations on Ukraine could take place at all.
