U.S. President Donald Trump plans to hold in Egypt an international summit of leaders dedicated to the Gaza Strip crisis and the prospects of the peace process between Israel and the Hamas group. According to government sources, the event is expected to involve heads of state or foreign ministers from several countries, including Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Indonesia.
The main goal of the summit is to garner broad international support for the peace plan for Gaza, especially in the areas of post-conflict governance, security provision, and the restoration of critical infrastructure, which are still under discussion between the parties to the conflict.
According to the same information, on October 13, Trump will travel to Egypt and participate in the ceremony signing the peace agreement between Israel and Hamas together with the other guarantors of the agreement in Gaza – Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey.
On October 9, in Egypt, the first round of negotiations between Hamas representatives and mediators regarding the settlement of the Gaza situation concluded. According to participants, the meeting took place in a positive atmosphere.
It was then that Trump stated that Israel and Hamas had taken the first steps of the peace plan. Meanwhile, Gaza’s civil defense reported new Israeli strikes following announcements of progress toward ceasing hostilities in the region.
What the President’s Peace Plan for Gaza Includes
On September 30, Trump met with the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington and announced a ceasefire plan for the Gaza Strip.
Among the proposed steps are the release of hostages seized by Hamas during the attacks of October 7, 2023; after the ceasefire, humanitarian aid for the population and the restoration of Gaza’s critical infrastructure.
The United States also proposes to take on the role of mediator between Israel and the Palestinian Authority regarding the restoration of administrative institutions in Gaza, with Hamas excluded from participation; the plan also provides for demilitarization of the region and the creation of a terrorism-free zone with prospects for deradicalization.
According to U.S. partners, Gaza will be given a certain space outside Hamas’ influence, and temporary international stabilization forces will be deployed on the ground; the training of police forces in Gaza will be carried out by a vetted Palestinian Authority under the supervision of the United States, Israel, Egypt, and Jordan.
The plan also provides for agreeing on de-escalation mechanisms and guarantees that Israel will not revert to a full occupation of Gaza, and that the Gaza Strip will come under the protection of international stabilization forces; should reforms proceed, Palestine should have a path to sovereignty and full statehood.
On October 3, Hamas sent a reply to Trump’s proposal; the group expressed willingness to release hostages taken during the October 7, 2023 attack.
In the context of developments, this is a step toward creating a multilateral format that could significantly affect regional security, humanitarian issues, and the future reconstruction of Gaza, while leaving open questions about specific monitoring mechanisms and long-term oversight of the agreements.
