U.S. President Donald Trump has asked the President of Israel to fully pardon Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in his ongoing corruption case.

In a letter released by the Israeli president’s spokesman, Trump wrote:

“I hereby urge you to fully pardon Benjamin Netanyahu, who was a powerful and decisive prime minister in wartime, and now leads Israel in peacetime, which includes my ongoing work with key Middle East leaders with the aim of bringing many additional countries into the worldwide changes of the Abraham Accords.”

– Donald Trump

Netanyahu faces charges of fraud, bribery, and breach of trust in three separate cases that began during Trump’s first term. He says he is not guilty, and is currently testifying in court as part of the proceedings.

“While I fully respect the independence of Israel’s judicial system and its requirements, I believe that the ‘case’ against Bibi Netanyahu, who has long opposed me, including against Israel’s very staunch opponent Iran, is political, unfounded persecution.”

– Donald Trump

“He holds Trump in high regard and values his unwavering support for Israel, his tremendous contribution to the return of hostages, the transformation of the Middle East and Gaza, and ensuring Israel’s security.”

– Office of Isaac Herzog

“Anyone seeking a pardon should submit a request in accordance with established procedures.”

Meanwhile, Herzog’s office also noted that Netanyahu has not currently submitted an official request for a pardon in his ongoing trial.
