The star wide receiver Tyreek Hill of the Miami Dolphins could miss the rest of the season due to a sudden left knee injury sustained near the sideline after the catch during Monday night’s game.

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said Hill was diagnosed with a knee dislocation. He will remain under observation in the hospital for one night.

Before he was carted off the field, Hill’s leg was secured with an air-immobilization device; he applauded and received support from fans, after which he was taken to the nearest hospital for X-rays and monitoring of the injury.

“He was probably in the best spirits of any player who has ever seen such a horrific moment,” McDaniel said. “He immediately had wide eyes and said, ‘I’m okay – just make sure the guys win.’ He was focused on the team.”

Overview of the incident and the organization’s reaction

On Tuesday, additional information about the nature of the injury was expected, McDaniel said.

Hill sustained the injury on the reception and was knocked down near the Jets’ sideline at 1:21 of the third quarter. He reached for the goal line and planted his left foot, after which the knee likely buckled on the fall.

Players from both teams dropped to their knees at various spots on the field as medics tended to Hill, and a cart was immediately called. The trip across the field to the tunnel leading to the Dolphins’ locker room took a few minutes.

Laughter and light banter with Hill appeared even before his cart, and his reaction, McDaniel said, helped calm the team – the Dolphins went on to beat the Jets 27–21, earning their first win in four games this season.

“It’s just his personality. That’s who he is,” quarterback Tua Tagovailoa said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with him.”

The league quickly reacted to the incident: Hill’s former teammate and current Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes posted a brief message: “Prayers for him…”

Hill, a five-time All-Pro and Super Bowl champion with the Chiefs in the 2019 season, at the time had a season-high of six receptions when he was injured.

Since his NFL debut in 2017, Hill has compiled 11,363 receiving yards, 819 receptions and 83 touchdowns, placing him among the league’s top players in recent years.

“This is part of the game. It’s the sad reality we live in,” added defensive end Zach Sieler. “We have to play every second as if it’s the last.”

At the time of the injury, Hill was in his 10th NFL season and his fourth with the Dolphins. In 2023, he led the league in receiving yards (1,799), despite some struggles in Miami, including the possibility of playing for other teams.

While working on recovery and supporting the team, Hill demonstrated leadership that, according to McDaniel, was evident even after the injury.

“We talked a lot about what Hill did this offseason, and the main part was leading by example and staying connected with his teammates,” the coach said. “He used that connectivity to help the team finish the season on the right note. He inspired in this situation, and I think his teammates benefited from it.”
