UK-Syria Diplomatic Restoration and Assad Regime Collapse in 2025

This is stated in the statement on the UK government website

The official visit of the United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary David Lammy to Syria marked a significant event, signaling the restoration of diplomatic relations between the countries after a 14-year hiatus. This break, which occurred in 2011, is now behind them as the parties have reached an agreement to renew cooperation, according to the UK government website.

During his visit, Lammy announced financial support for the removal of chemical weapons from Syria, as well as efforts to combat illegal migration and implement reforms of the new transitional government.

“A stable Syria serves the interests of the United Kingdom by reducing the risk of illegal migration, ensuring the destruction of chemical weapons, combating the threat of terrorism, and implementing the government’s reform plan.”

The United Kingdom plans to allocate over £94 million to support measures aimed at removing chemical weapons and implementing reforms in Syria.

On July 1, 2025, it was announced that the United States of America lifted sanctions against Syria, emphasizing its support for stability and peace in the country. In June 2025, Syria regained access to the international SWIFT payment system, opening new opportunities for its economy after a prolonged period of isolation due to war and sanctions.

The Overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s Regime

On December 8, 2024, Syrian rebels declared the liberation of Damascus, leading to President Bashar al-Assad fleeing the capital. According to Reuters, Assad’s plane may have crashed, but this information was not confirmed.

Syrian Prime Minister Muhammad Ghazi al-Jalali expressed readiness to cooperate with the new leadership chosen by the people and to facilitate the transfer of power.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that following negotiations with the rebels, Bashar al-Assad agreed to leave the country peacefully. Later that evening, Russian media announced that Assad had arrived in Russia, where he was granted asylum by decision of President Vladimir Putin.

On December 10, 2024, Mohammed al-Bashira, former leader of the rebels’ “salvation government,” was appointed interim prime minister of Syria’s transitional government until March 1, 2025. He is considered a close ally of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s leader Abu Mohammed al-Jolani.

Ahmed al-Sharaa, known as Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, became the leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which opposed Assad’s regime. On January 29, 2025, he was declared president of Syria during the transitional period.
