Ukraine and Partners Push Forward 20th Sanctions Package Against Russia

As online media Ukrinform reports Ukrinform.

There is no need to pause – and it must not be paused – on sanctions against Russia; Ukraine is hearing assurances from partners that work in this area will continue.

Deputy Head of the President’s Office Ihor Zhovkva, on a TV program, stressed that partners plan active work on the next, the 20th package of sanctions.

The President of the European Commission said that we are already starting work on the 20th package of sanctions. That means in this matter we must not stop, nor should we. And we have heard from partners that they will continue to work. But the unconditional synchronization of sanctions is what Ukraine has long been asking for. And they are finally taking place – sanctions in the energy sector

Sanctions and the Partners’ Reaction

The Deputy Head of the Office also reported that over several days sanctions against Russia were imposed simultaneously: first a strong U.S. package, and by the next morning the European Union approved the 19th package. In addition, Britain also rolled out a sanctions package as usual.

These sanctions, first and foremost, are aimed at the energy sector and Russia’s energy capacity. And we are already seeing the reaction… including in the press, that countries such as China and India are already talking about a substantial reduction in purchases of Russian oil, understanding that sanctions will be tougher from now on

He also highlighted the PURL program, which is working to procure critically needed weapons for Ukraine – air defense systems and missiles.

«But more funds are needed. Today they spoke – and the President thanked – the countries that joined PURL. Recently, as we know, Spain did so, and Norway has already allocated the second tranche of aid. But many NATO countries have not yet joined this program,» said the Deputy Head of the President’s Office.

In his view, nearly every NATO country should participate in this program – because right now this is the most needed.

As reported, the value of Rosneft and Lukoil shares fell by $5.2 billion after the imposition of U.S. sanctions.
