A landmark event took place in the history of Ukrainian fencing: the Ukrainian women’s épée team won “gold” for the first time at the 2025 European Championships held in the Italian city of Genoa. This victory marked Ukraine’s third medal at the tournament and the second in the épée discipline.
The Ukrainian team in the competition included the 2022 European champion Vlada Kharkova, Olena Kryvytska, Inna Brovko, and debutant Anna Maksymenko. The Ukrainian fencers started the competition from the second round, holding the status of the fourth seed.
The first opponents for the Ukrainian team were the fencers from Finland, whom the Ukrainians confidently defeated with a score of 45:24. In the quarterfinals, Ukraine faced the Hungarian team, where the battle lasted until the last seconds, but the “blue and yellow” secured a narrow victory of 44:43.
In the semifinals, the Ukrainian épée fencers met the Italian team, quickly gaining the advantage. Olena Kryvytska was the top scorer with 17 points, and the team won 45:27, advancing to the final.
In the decisive match, the Ukrainians competed against the Swiss team. The Ukrainian athletes won six out of nine bouts. Only Boyko and Kryvytska lost to Angelina Favre (5:6 and 3:6 respectively), and Inna Brovko narrowly lost to Paolin Brunner (6:7). The final score was 45:34 in favor of Ukraine.
This victory was historic, as it was the first time the Ukrainian team won “gold” in the women’s team épée at the European Championships. Overall, this is Ukraine’s sixth medal in this discipline: previously, there was a silver in 1998 and bronze medals in 2001, 2002, 2005, and 2022.
At the 2025 European Championships, Ukraine has already won three medals: in addition to the women’s épée team gold, Roman Svichkar won gold in the men’s individual competition, and sabre fencer Alina Komashchuk earned “silver”.
