Ukrainian Drone Defense Mission Begins in Denmark to Boost European Security

As reported by Deutsche Welle.

In Denmark, a mission of Ukrainian military specialists specializing in counter-drone operations has begun its work. The goal is to transfer Ukrainian experience and technical developments to Danish colleagues. Official confirmation came on September 30 during public statements by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on social media.

Our troops have begun deploying a mission in Denmark to spread Ukrainian experience in drone defense. The team arrived to participate in joint training with partners that could form the basis for a new system to counter Russian and other drones

– Volodymyr Zelensky

Zelensky stressed that Ukrainian experience in countering drones has significant potential to strengthen European security and could become a key element of a future system to counter airborne threats.

The Ukrainian experience is the most relevant now in Europe, and it is our experience, our specialists, our technologies that could become a key element of Europe’s future “Drone Wall” – a large-scale project that will guarantee safety in the sky

– Volodymyr Zelensky

After the mission is completed, Denmark plans to outline the framework for further cooperation with other European countries, Zelensky noted.

In tandem with Denmark, other states are joining this initiative. Finland has dispatched its specialists to support countering unmanned aircraft, as Finland’s President Alexander Stubb announced on X.

Finland fully supports Denmark in its efforts to ensure airspace security and counter hybrid threats of this type, as we have observed over the past days and weeks. To make this support concrete, Finland today decided to deploy a counter-UAV contingent in Denmark

– Alexander Stubb

The Finnish Border Guard will also provide Denmark with support within its capabilities, he added, noting that coordination of approaches to counter hybrid threats will continue.

No one should have any doubt that we are facing such a level of activity and aggression in the “gray zone,” which will test us and test other countries

– John Gili

Additionally, Germany, France, and Sweden said they would send military personnel and counter-drone systems to Denmark to bolster security during EU leader meetings. The United Kingdom also announced a decision to deploy drone countermeasures, and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen described the current drone incidents as hybrid attacks on the country.

Context and Significance for Europe

Experts note that Ukraine’s joint experience in countering drones demonstrates the potential for closer coordination among partner countries, sharing of technologies, training, and standardization of safety standards in Europe’s airspace. Such initiatives could potentially increase countries’ readiness to rapidly respond to drones and hybrid threats.
