As reported by General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

Ukrainian servicemen arrived in Denmark to train Danish units in countering drones. In September, Danish airspace repeatedly became the arena for the appearance of drones of unknown origin, as reported by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The weekly training plan includes practical exercises, knowledge exchange, and joint work on countering air threats, with the aim of increasing the readiness of both forces and expanding their capabilities in the fight against drones.

“Such training is an important step in strengthening interoperability between the Armed Forces of Ukraine and Denmark, and it makes our countries stronger in the joint pursuit of peace and security in Europe”

– General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

Timeline of events and context

Earlier it became known that Sweden is supplying Denmark with radar systems and counter-drone capabilities ahead of EU leaders’ meetings in Copenhagen.

On the evening of September 22, Danish and Norwegian police reported drone incidents in Copenhagen and Oslo. In the Danish capital, traffic at Copenhagen’s largest airport, Kastrup, was brought to a complete standstill due to the appearance of two to three large drones. More than 35 flights were redirected to other airports. Passenger aircraft circled over the city, and one of them made an emergency landing due to fuel shortage. Airport operations resumed around 01:00 after a four-hour downtime.

The Aalborg Airport in northern Denmark was also temporarily closed in the night of September 24–25 due to drones in the airspace.

According to the Danish defense minister, on Wednesday evening and for the rest of the night drones flew around a number of Danish airports and military facilities.

“This is definitely not a coincidence”

– Danish Minister of Defense

Meanwhile, around midnight on Thursday, September 25, Aalborg Airport was briefly closed due to a suspected UAV threat. On the night of September 28, the Danish Armed Forces detected several drones of unknown origin flying near the country’s military facilities.

Such events underscore the growing role of counter-drone measures in European security and underscore the importance of cooperation among allies to enhance defense readiness and the speed of response to air threats.
