On November 6, the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban set out for the United States on an official visit, where a meeting with President Donald Trump was planned. Orban said that the purpose of the trip was to open a new chapter in bilateral relations and to set right what has suffered during the Biden administration. The office announced this on the prime minister’s own Facebook page, and the Hungarian publication Index also quoted his words. “America, here we come” – that’s how Orban captioned the photo of the delegation from the plane.
Agenda for the Meeting and Priorities
Ahead of departure, Orban stressed that after President Trump’s reelection, new prospects have emerged in Hungary–United States relations.
“to open a new chapter in Hungarian-American relations with President Trump”
According to the head of government, the visit is aimed at helping to develop a strategic partnership in energy, investments, defense, and consultations on the new world situation after the Russia-Ukraine war. Orban added that the agreements should be based on mutual benefit and the interests of all Hungarians.
“The first ten months of this year were the first phase during which we corrected all that Hungary and Hungarian-American relations had suffered under the Biden administration”
According to him, Orban is traveling to Washington with the aim of “opening a new chapter in Hungarian-American relations with President Trump” and continuing the dialogue on energy supplies, security, the economy, and regional issues.
“Our goal is to develop a strategic partnership that includes energy relations, investments, defense cooperation, and consultations on a world after the Russia-Ukraine war. We are working on an agreement based on mutual benefit and the good of all Hungarians”
It is expected that on November 7 Orban will officially meet with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House. According to Hungarian government officials, topics include the conclusion of the Russia-Ukraine war and the framework for future cooperation. The minister of the Prime Minister’s Office, Gergely Gulyás, added that the talks have been going on for a long time: they are discussing agreements in energy, the defense-industrial sector, the economy, and finance. Some agreements are already at the stage of coordination, others are still under discussion. Earlier media reported about a planned visit on November 8.
Following this visit, Orban emphasizes Hungary’s intention to maintain active cooperation with Washington on energy, security, and economic issues within the regional and global agenda.
