As reported by the online media Suspilne.
Yaroslava Mahuchikh, a Ukrainian high jumper, shared her impressions after competing at the Diamond League stage in Stockholm. She finished the competition with a “silver,” ending her two-year winning streak outdoors. After a successful jump at 1.99 m, Yaroslava attempted to clear two more heights – 2.01 m and 2.03 m – but unfortunately failed all three attempts. The victory went to Australian Nicola Olyslagers, who cleared 2.01 m.
Yaroslava’s next challenge will be the eighth stage of the Diamond League, taking place on June 20 in Paris. It was there last year that she set the world record by jumping 2.10 m. Ahead of the competition, Mahuchikh reviewed her performance in Stockholm with her coach, Tetyana Stepanova.
“Tetyana Volodymyrivna and I discussed my jumps in Stockholm, watched again the jumps at 2.07 m and 2.10 m, how I ran then, and how I need to run. In Stockholm, I struggled a bit with the wind. That was strange for me because usually I don’t have problems with it, especially when the wind is in my face. I made too many mistakes that cost me the result because I know I could have jumped much higher,”
“In Stockholm, Nicola was better prepared than me. But after that, you have to believe that you can win again, jump higher than 1.99 meters. My coach told me: ‘I know you’re ready.’ So that’s not a problem. We’re working,”
Yaroslava has 21 wins at Diamond League stages. She won at this level for the first time in May 2019, and before Stockholm, she had a streak of ten consecutive victories.
“But it’s okay [that I placed second in Stockholm], I’m generally happy to represent my country at Diamond League stages for such a long time now. It’s already the sixth year. I’m glad to have this opportunity to compete and then go out and talk to people. Even if you jump: second, first, show a good result, but there’s already a world record and people get a bit more interested to ask questions, and I get to tell them,” the athlete noted.
Currently, Yaroslava is actively preparing for the competition in Paris, with the main goal of the 2025 season being the World Championships, which will take place in Tokyo from September 13 to 21.
“For this stage in Paris and generally now, there’s no pressure that I have to clear a certain height, I just need to refine my approach and skills to be ready. After all, the main event is the World Championships in Tokyo, where, by the way, I will celebrate my birthday. So we are preparing for the Worlds, and I want to show my best result there. But sometimes it happens: all the stars align, and suddenly you jump, and if it happens earlier, that would be great,”
The women’s high jump competition in Paris will take place on June 20 at 22:06 Kyiv time.
