Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held an important meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, during which they discussed the next steps following a recent phone conversation with former U.S. President Donald Trump. Zelensky shared this information on his Telegram channel.

During the discussion with Merz, the leaders reviewed the details of the dialogue with Trump that took place on May 19, and also exchanged views on consultations with European partners held the same day.

“We are coordinating all our actions to the fullest extent. It is important to maintain unity among all partners and seek solutions that can lead to a just peace,” Zelensky emphasized.

Additionally, the presidents discussed prospects for Ukraine’s recovery after the end of hostilities. Zelensky highlighted the need to develop a clear plan that will help bring peace closer and ensure continued support for the country.

On May 19, Donald Trump also held a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to reports, they discussed ceasefire issues in the war initiated by Russia against Ukraine, as well as possible paths to peaceful conflict resolution.

Putin noted that a ceasefire is only possible upon reaching appropriate agreements, though specific details were not disclosed. He also mentioned a potential memorandum between Russia and Ukraine that could include ceasefire terms and conflict resolution principles, expressing hope for positive progress in negotiations in Istanbul.

On the same day, Zelensky had two phone conversations with Trump – one before his call with Putin, and another afterward. The second discussion included leaders of the European Commission, France, Italy, Germany, and Finland.

Zelensky stated that if the Russian side proposes a memorandum, it will not remain secret. Such a document could serve as the foundation for creating a “map” leading to the end of the war, including the conclusion of a peace agreement. The memorandum would provide for a ceasefire and must be supported by both parties.
