The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, congratulated Moldova’s colleague Maia Sandu on the victory of the pro-European PAS party in Moldova’s parliamentary elections, which took place on September 28. The head of state posted his words of support on Telegram.
“These elections showed that Russian destabilizing activity loses, and Moldova in Europe – wins. Russian subversive activity, ongoing disinformation – none of this worked. It’s important that Moldova was effective in defending against threats together with everyone who helped”
According to preliminary results of processing the PAS protocols, it has about 50.16% of the votes and leads among pro-European forces. In second place is the opposition bloc, which has about 24.19% support.
Additionally, the parliament includes the pro-European party bloc “Alternative” (7.97%), the party “Our Party” by Renato Usatogo – 6.20% and “Democracy at Home” – 5.62%. In the new Moldovan parliament, forces oriented toward the country’s European course will prevail.
Context of the elections
On September 28, for the first time, postal voting for the diaspora was introduced. According to the Central Election Commission, as of 11:25, 99.91% of protocols have been processed.
Zelensky added: Ukraine will always support Moldova and will work together to strengthen security and the region’s integration aspirations.
Reaction to Russian interference
In the context of the events, Sandu emphasized that Russia is preparing for unprecedented interference in the parliamentary elections. According to experts, the Russian Federation may use political mechanisms and disinformation, as well as mobilize citizens abroad and activate networks among Orthodox branches and bot networks to spread fakes.
